FCSO DEPUTY CHARGED WITH MISCONDUCT AND ASSAULT

Florence County Sheriff’s Office Investigators have charged a former deputy with Misconduct in Office (S.C. Code Ann. 17-25-030) and Assault & Battery (Second Degree) (S.C. Code Ann. 16-03-600(D)(1)). According to Investigators, on or about February 1, 2019 former FCSO Deputy Brian Thomas Proffitt, age 35, of 3023 Red Berry Circle, Effingham, SC 29541 is alleged to have knowingly omitted material information from an incident report which would have potentially implicated him in an alleged assault. In addition, Investigators allege that Proffitt committed an assault on the suspect during an arrest. Proffitt has been on administrative leave during the investigation and his employment with FCSO was terminated yesterday.

“We hold our deputies to a high standard,” Sheriff Kenney Boone stated. “We stand by them when they meet our standard, and we hold them accountable when they do not. For us this is a sad day, but transparency demands that we act in such a way that the public knows that we discharge our law enforcement duties fairly and impartially.”

Proffitt was released from the Florence County Detention Center yesterday on a $5000.00 surety bond which was set by a Florence County Magistrate.
